What is BLT?

Better Living for Texans (BLT) is a nutrition education program that targets food stamp recipients and applicants. The learning approach focus of basic nutrition.

Topics include:

  • My Pyramid: Better Health with Better Choices
  • Food Safety
  • Stretching your Food Dollars
  • Bone up on Calcium
  • Color your way 5-A-Day
  • Menu Planning

BLT is a collaborative effort funded by USDA, through Texas Health and Human Commission Services and then sub-contracted to Texas Cooperative Extension for implementation. It is through Extension that you see BLT in action. Lead agents, extension assistants or program assistants will be the professionals teaching the lessons and working side by side with you to meet the nutrition needs of food stamp recipients and their families.

Where do these classes take place?

That is one of the great advantages! BLT will come to you. It was designed to be mobile. A BLT group can meet almost anywhere; your community center, housing authority office, apartments, common areas, senior centers, or church facilities.
